Melbourne Metro Tunnel. The Metro Tunnel will untangle the City Loop by taking three of Melbourne’s busiest train lines – Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury – out of the Loop and running them through the new tunnel, creating space for more trains, more often across the network. The tunnel will serve as a vital alternative to the city’s heavily congested West Gate Bridge. Once completed, this new road, including 6.8 kilometres of tunnel, will improve connections between Melbourne’s west, the city centre, and Melbourne’s major ports. The West Gate Tunnel project includes: Construction of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop's Jolimont access tunnel, as viewed from the Reserve Bank building on 6 October 1972.

The majority of the project will be taking place within the City of Melbourne.

By now, most of you would have known about the construction of the Melbourne Metro 1. This is a cross-city rail tunnel that will connect the Pakenham/Cranbourne line in the south-east to the Sunbury line in the north-west. It runs from South Yarra to South Kensington and comprises 5 new underground stations.
